Late 19th Century American Albany Slip Stoneware Preserve Jar c. 1880-1900

✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 442 | The Chocolate Slip Crock

There is a distinct satisfaction in handling utilitarian stoneware that has actually earned its keep. Long before commercial refrigeration, heavy alkaline and Albany-slip-glazed crocks like this were the workhorses of American pantries, housing pickled vegetables, salted meats, and fruit preserves through harsh winters.

Dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900), this heavy, wheel-thrown stoneware preserve jar features a rich, dark chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze with characteristic drips running down the body. Standing approximately 7 1/4 inches tall and roughly 6 inches across, it features a classic squat shoulder, a short collared mouth designed for a wax seal or lid, and a rugged, unglazed buff clay base with honest kiln grit and age patina.

Completely unmarked and wonderfully rustic, it carries the bumps, bruises, and glaze flakes of real nineteenth-century kitchen service—including a notable glaze loss chip at the rim—giving it an authentic primitive character that cannot be faked.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.

Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.

The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.

Storied Vintage. Curated with Intention.
