Antique Stoneware Jug 1 Gallon Cobalt Accent Whiskey Jug Primitive Farmhouse 10 In

✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 410 | The Root Cellar Flagon

Before glass bottling lines and corrugated cardboard replaced traditional American country store vessels, liquid pantry staples—from hard cider and corn whiskey to molasses and vinegar—lived in thick-walled, salt-glazed stoneware. Thrown by hand on a foot-treadled potter's wheel, these sturdy utilitarian jugs were built to survive cellar floors, buggy rides, and decades of hard daily labor.

Dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, this authentic one-gallon shoulder jug embodies honest American primitive pottery. Standing 10 1/4 inches tall with a broad, rounded shoulder tapering to a heavy 6 3/4-inch base, the jug is turned from dense buff-colored stoneware clay. The exterior features a smooth, satin salt glaze in warm oatmeal, sandy beige, and toasted biscuit tones with natural iron speckling and kiln flashing.

Potter's craftsmanship is evident in the neck tooling and accents. The short cylindrical neck features double incised collar rings washed in hand-applied cobalt slip, which fired in the reduction kiln to a dark, inky midnight purple-black. A matching cobalt line traces the ridge of the heavy hand-pulled strap handle, which is securely anchored with a substantial thumb wash at the base. Peering inside the narrow pour spout reveals a glossy, dark chocolate-brown interior lined with authentic Albany clay slip to ensure the vessel remained completely liquid-tight.

Bearing honest signs of its long working life, this antique vessel brings grounded history and rustic warmth to a primitive farmhouse kitchen, rustic open shelving, or an English cottage collection.

The Vintage Pedigree & Artistry

🔍 Specifications, Materials & Condition

Measurements
Height: Approximately 10 1/4" tall
Base Diameter: Approximately 6 3/4" across
Shoulder Width: Approximately 7" across body (excluding handle)
Opening Diameter: Approximately 1" inner mouth opening

Materials: Glazed ceramic stoneware, cobalt slip, Albany slip.

Condition Transparency: Very good antique utilitarian condition with authentic character from a century of functional use. The stoneware body, spout, and applied strap handle are structurally solid with no major cracks or structural damage. There are tiny, expected chips and roughness around the interior mouth rim from cork removal, along with normal manufacturing kiln pops and glaze skips. The inky purple-black cobalt lines on the neck collar and handle are original to firing. Honest working patina includes scattered white and pale lavender historic paint flecks on the neck and shoulder (from past domestic surroundings), surface scuffs, and natural ground discoloration on the unglazed bottom.

Care: Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth. To preserve the antique clay body and glaze integrity, do not submerge in water or subject to modern dishwashers.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.

Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.

The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
