There is an undeniable charm to mid-century novelty ornaments that abandoned manic holiday cheer in favor of quiet, existential longing. While department store Santas beamed from every branch, Japanese and Hong Kong novelty workshops specialized in tiny, sleep-deprived woodland creatures who looked like they were already completely exhausted by December.

Molded from lightweight blow-molded plastic and coated in fuzzy white flocking, this vintage mid-century holiday mouse sits curled forward, clutching a glittering white tinsel-chenille snowball securely against its chest. It wears a bright red flocked cone sweater and a flat-topped red felt pillbox fez trimmed with white zigzag rickrack braid.

The personality is entirely in the face. With heavy, downcast painted eyelids, spiky black lashes, dotted whisker pads, and a solitary white buck tooth peeking below a velvet-black nose, this little sentry appears mildly mournful, wonderfully sleepy, and fiercely protective of its frozen treasure. Suspended by an original twisted gold metallic cord, it brings authentic retro kitsch to the boughs of a vintage aluminum or feather tree.

Maker: Unmarked vintage novelty import (Attributed to Japan or Hong Kong manufacture).

Measurements
Height: Approximately 3 1/2" to 3 3/4" from the top of the felt hat to the lowest foot (excluding hanging cord)

Materials: Molded plastic, flocking, felt, chenille, metallic hanging cord.

Condition Transparency: Very good vintage condition with honest mid-century character. The white and red flocking is remarkably intact across the face, ears, body, and tail, with no bald spots or structural cracks. A loose red thread rests near the right ear, and stray white lint fibers cling naturally to the felt hat and flocking. The back of the head shows faint age-related toning. The reverse of the red felt pillbox hat has a small clean slit at the seam, and the neck join displays faint tan vintage adhesive toning original to manufacture. The gold hanging cord is firmly attached.

Care: Dust gently with a soft dry artist brush or air bulb. Keep dry and avoid water or cleaning sprays, which will damage vintage flocking and felt.
