In the summer of 1988, Marjorie and Gerald experienced what historians in their immediate family still refer to as the Great Paprika Incident.

They had been married for twenty-six years, a tenure largely survived through mutual stubbornness and a strict division of kitchen labor.

On a humid Tuesday in July, Gerald took it upon himself to make the egg salad for their church picnic. Not only did he chop the celery into chunks the size of gravel, but he also added a heavy-handed dash of sweet paprika AND a spoonful of sweet pickle relish.

Marjorie, a woman who believed egg salad required only Hellmann's mayonnaise, yellow mustard, salt, and black pepper, viewed this as a direct violation of their marriage vows.

A quiet, frostbitten silence descended upon the house for forty-eight hours. Neither of them was willing to apologize first, because apologizing meant conceding territory on the pickle relish question.

On Thursday afternoon, Gerald walked into the kitchen, placed a small box next to Marjorie's coffee cup, and walked back out to the garage to reorganize his socket wrenches.

Inside the box was this solid sterling silver bypass ring: two long-necked giraffes wrapping in opposite directions around the finger until they met nose-to-nose in the middle, forced by the laws of metallurgy to look directly at each other and work things out.

Marjorie put the ring on her finger, walked out to the driveway, and admitted that the paprika actually added nice color. Peace was restored, though Gerald was permanently reassigned to paper plate duty for all future picnics.

Cast in substantial sterling silver and weighing approximately 6 grams, this sculptural figural ring is full of personality and tactile detail.

Each giraffe is rendered in high relief with distinct ossicones (those charming little horn-like knobs on top of their heads), cupped ears, gentle eyes, and tapered muzzles that rest cheek-to-cheek across the top of the finger.

Their long necks form the band itself, patterned with raised reticulated spots over a deeply oxidized dark background that makes the silver latticework pop.

The interior of the band is stamped "Sterling" alongside an artisan hallmark featuring a hand-stamped crescent moon and an "S" mark. Because the two necks overlap in a wide bypass silhouette, the ring fits an approximate US size 6 to 6.5 comfortably.

Having survived decades of domestic diplomacy, the ring remains in very good vintage condition. All four ossicones and four ears are completely intact with no chips, bends, or repairs. We have intentionally left the original dark oxidized patina unpolished in the recesses to preserve its sculptural depth, while the high points gleam with a warm, soft silver luster. The interior of the band shows honest, light surface wear consistent with age and normal use.
