✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 378 | The First Communion Dresser Vigil of 1986

In the mid-1980s, no childhood bedroom or grandmother's curio cabinet was considered structurally complete without at least one mother-of-pearl lusterware angel standing guard on the dresser.

They were the undisputed royalty of church bazaars, hospital gift shops, and First Communion gift tables.

If you grew up in that era, you knew the rules: you were allowed to admire the rainbow shimmer on the wings, you were allowed to line her up next to your porcelain birthstone dolls, and you were strictly forbidden from using her as an action figure.

Finished in a classic late-century pearlized luster glaze over white ceramic, this sweet kneeling cherub has spent the last forty years taking her supervisory duties very seriously.

Standing approximately 3 1/4 inches tall, she is sculpted kneeling in quiet contemplation with her hands pressed together under her chin, and her eyes cast softly downward.

Look at the charming period details in the mold: her bob-length hair has a neat center part with sculpted waves that flip out at the shoulders, her robe is tied with a simple waist sash, and her tiny bare feet peek out just below the hem at the knees.

Behind her shoulders rise tall, arched wings with molded feather lines on the reverse.

The glaze is the star of the show. Coated in an iridescent mother-of-pearl overglaze, the white ceramic catches the room light and throws pastel flashes of rose pink, lavender, mint green, and sky blue from every angle.

Turn her over to find a fully glazed base with a smooth, recessed circular dimple in the center where the slip-cast mold was sealed before firing.

Having kept watch over a few different dressers through the decades, she remains in very good vintage condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. Honest vintage and kiln character includes tiny dark pinpoint specks in the recessed crevices of the forehead, hands, and waist, faint age residue tucked along the back neck and wing seam, a small matte white factory glaze skip where the arm meets the wing, and normal shelf wear to the rainbow luster around the bottom foot rim.

Tuck her onto a sunlit windowsill, add her to a holiday mantel display, or gift her as a sweet baptism, First Communion, or memorial keepsake.
