✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 377 | The Cottontail Hostage Negotiations of 1989

In 1989, suburban parents spent considerable energy teaching their children about the concept of wild nature.

The rule was simple: if you spot a wild animal in the meadow, you observe it quietly from a respectful distance. You do not chase it, you do not feed it table scraps, and you certainly do not attempt to bring it indoors.

Four-year-olds dressed in Sunday ruffles had zero interest in those guidelines.

Look at the posture in this vintage illustration.

This is not a casual garden encounter. This is a successful backyard sting operation.

Having spotted a wild brown rabbit grazing near the hedgerow, this barefoot blonde toddler completed a tactical sprint through the dry briars in an eyelet lace dress, apprehended the suspect, and tucked it firmly into her lap.

Look closely at her expression. She is not gazing lovingly into the rabbit's eyes. She is looking sharply over her shoulder, listening intently for the sound of an older brother or a parent about to demand that she put the rabbit back immediately.

Meanwhile, the rabbit has surrendered entirely to its fate, completely immobilized by sixty yards of white cotton ruffles and an unbreakable four-year-old bear hug.

The framing on this piece is tailored to traditional quality.

Housed beneath real glass in a solid wood frame with a dark walnut stain, the artwork is framed with a custom double mat: a warm ochre inner fillet layered beneath a wide cream outer mat that features an elegant embossed chevron border along the lower edge.

On the reverse, you will find the original dust paper fitted with steel screw eyes and a secure twisted hanging wire, making it ready to hang right out of the box.

Whether styled on a wire display easel in a cottage nursery, hung as part of a vintage pastoral gallery wall, or displayed on a country bookshelf, this framed print brings immediate warmth, nostalgic humor, and storybook charm to your home.

Having spent decades in domestic display, it remains in very good vintage condition. The color print is bright, colorful, and clean beneath the glass with no moisture damage or fading. The glass is clear and crack-free. The double mat package is flat and neat, with faint pinpoint vintage spotting along the upper border. The solid wood frame is structurally sound, with tight mitered corners and light edge rubbing on the finish exposing lighter wood beneath. The reverse backing paper shows vintage handling scuffs and small punctures. Ready to hang.

Style it in a storybook reading corner, prop it on an entryway console, or gift it to someone who loves vintage bunnies, nostalgic nursery art, and children with absolute determination.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.
- Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.
- The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
