Vintage Hummelstown, PA Stoneware Crock Cobalt Blue Folk Art Jar 6 In
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 371
The Swatara Creek Boundary Dispute of 1982
In the late 20th century, the historic borough of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, was facing an existential identity crisis.
To the west sat Harrisburg, boasting the state capitol and world-famous 19th-century stoneware foundries. To the east sat Hershey, where the streetlights were shaped as chocolate drops and the entire town smelled like melted cocoa butter.
Hummelstown was caught directly in the middle along the Swatara Creek.
Tired of having out-of-town visitors ask for directions to the nearest roller coaster, local pride took a firm, traditional stand. They skipped the chocolate novelties and commissioned an authentic piece of heavy Pennsylvania salt-glaze style folk stoneware.
The directive was unmistakable: take dense regional clay, throw it on a wheel with a proper rolled collar rim, and paint "HUMMELSTOWN PA." in bold cobalt slip right across the front so there could be zero confusion about whose territory you were standing in.
Look at the artisan craftsmanship on this piece.
The front features a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch foliate plume (reminiscent of the historic tulip and feather motifs of the Susquehanna Valley), framed by cobalt-blue accent bands around the neck and base.
The deep blue oxide was painted by hand, with rich pigment pooling along the lettering and leaves that gives the surface wonderful tactile depth.
Turn it around and peek inside to see the concentric throwing rings left by the potter's hands as the wet clay rose from the wheel. The flat base is unglazed raw earthenware, exactly as traditional salt-glazed jars were fired in wood kilns.
While made in homage to 19th-century stoneware, this late 20th-century revival jar was built for real modern domestic utility.
Whether stationed on a kitchen island holding wooden tasting spoons, displayed on an open hutch beside antique transferware, or repurposed as a handsome desk organizer for fountain pens, it brings immediate warmth, American pottery tradition, and genuine Pennsylvania pride to your home.
Having spent decades in quiet indoor display, it remains in very good vintage condition. The stoneware body is solid and crack-free with no chips along the rolled rim or base. Rings clearly when tapped. The cobalt blue slip is vibrant and sharp. Honest handmade character includes natural kiln glaze speckling, minor surface firing nuances, faint interior glaze residue, and a small dark glaze irregularity on the reverse lower blue band from the original kiln shelf.
Style it on a farmhouse sideboard, use it to anchor fresh kitchen herbs on a windowsill, or gift it to someone with deep roots in Dauphin County.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.
Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character that matches its age and previous love.
The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
