Vintage Framed Odilon Redon Print Wildflowers French Symbolist Art 14 In

✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 370 | The Symbolist Floral Truce of 1905

For the first forty years of his career, French painter Odilon Redon specialized almost entirely in brooding psychological nightmares.

He drew giant weeping eyeballs floating across desolate landscapes, smiling spiders lurking in dark corners, and shadowy figures pondering the mysteries of the universe in charcoal and lithographic black.

Eventually, his friends and patrons staged what must have been an artistic intervention. They politely asked if he could paint something gentle that would not terrify dinner guests when they walked into the parlor.

Redon agreed, reached for a box of colored pastels, and negotiated a historic creative truce.

Instead of a cheerful, ordinary bouquet of petunias, he went out into the French countryside and gathered wild field blossoms, returning to his studio to create an arrangement that looks like it was plucked directly out of a daydream.

Rendered in soft, velvety pastels against an earthy textured ground, the flowers seem to glow with quiet, mystical light. There are delicate white florets, nodding bluebells, and golden wildflowers tumbling from a simple terracotta vase.

The original masterpiece hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., entering the permanent collection in 1961 as a gift from Loula D. Lasker.

This vintage mid-to-late 20th-century framed color reproduction was produced so that everyday art lovers could bring a piece of the National Gallery into their own homes.

The reverse still bears its original vintage gallery identification label, proudly citing Redon, the artwork title, the museum donor, and Washington, D.C.

The framing is a perfect match for the moody Symbolist aesthetic. Housed beneath real glass, the artwork is framed in a solid wood moulding with a distressed gray-brown finish and a lighter recessed inner cove border that draws the eye straight into the floral bouquet.

Equipped with an attached twisted hanging wire on the reverse, it is ready to hang immediately and introduce European art history, contemplative texture, and grandmillennial warmth to your walls.

Having lived through decades of domestic admiration, it remains in very good vintage condition. The print is crisp and colorful beneath the glass, with natural velvety grain texture and a few tiny, faint pinpoint flecks near the vase. The glass is clear and crack-free. The wood frame is structurally solid and square, displaying authentic vintage finish rubbing and light edge wear consistent with its rustic styling. The reverse retains its original hanging wire and aged museum label.

Style it on a moody library gallery wall, prop it on an easel atop a dining credenza, or gift it to an art history lover who appreciates the dreamy world of the French Symbolists.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.

Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character that matches its age and previous love.

The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
