✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 369 | The Barnyard Slander Society of 1993

In 1993, long before community message boards or neighborhood gossip apps, the real news was distributed by five hens behind a barn in Cobb County, Georgia.

Look closely at this gathering. This is not a peaceful barnyard morning. This is an emergency session of the local slander committee.

Right in the center, a White Leghorn and a Rhode Island Red are standing beak to beak, whispering rumors about the rooster with absolute intensity.

Behind them, a Buff Orpington has turned her head away, pretending to mind her own business while silently absorbing every single word.

On the right, a Barred Plymouth Rock has her beak wide open, clearly delivering an indignant, squawking commentary on the entire situation.

Meanwhile, the red hen on the far left has her head buried in the clover, acting entirely detached from the drama while positioning herself perfectly within earshot.

Titled "A Hen Party" by regional Georgia artist Margaret R. Nicholas, this charming piece captures the humor and personality of a backyard flock.

This is an authentic vintage limited edition print, numbered 45 out of a small edition of only 185. It features two signatures: Nicholas's original green signature printed in the plate, alongside her handwritten pencil signature and edition number along the lower margin.

The provenance on the reverse tells a wonderful regional story. The back retains the artist's original studio stamp from Mableton, Georgia, along with the framing label from A&A Frame Shop in Austell, Georgia.

The shop label bears a historic 404 area code, dating the framing to before August 1995, when suburban Cobb County was officially switched to the 770 exchange.

The framing is pure country cottage quality. The print is housed beneath real glass inside a solid wood frame with a rounded profile and a warm oak finish.

The matting is custom and tailored: a textured tan outer mat accented by a dashed white stitch line, layered over a deep burgundy inner mat fillet that makes the red combs of the hens pop off the wall.

On the reverse, you will find the original dust paper fitted with a top sawtooth hanger, two protective rubber bumper pads, and the name "Kelci" penned in marker from a past owner's collection.

Whether hung in a farmhouse kitchen, propped on an open pantry shelf beside egg baskets, or styled in a country gallery wall, this signed print brings immediate warmth, humor, and vintage southern charm to your home.

Having spent decades in domestic display, it remains in very good vintage condition. The watercolor print is bright, colorful, and clean beneath the glass with no fading, foxing, or moisture marks. The glass is clear and crack-free. The double mat package is clean and flat. The wood frame is structurally solid with tight mitered corners and light vintage handling wear, including a small mark on the lower left corner. The reverse paper backing shows a vintage water tide stain along the upper right edge and the aforementioned inscription. Ready to hang.

Style it above a coffee bar, station it on a kitchen display easel, or gift it to a backyard chicken keeper who appreciates real poultry personality.
