In Denmark on Christmas Eve of 1978, bedtime was supposed to happen at eight o'clock sharp.

The children, however, had negotiated a critical tactical delay.

Look closely at this fireside gathering. This is not just a sweet domestic moment: this is a masterclass in holiday stalling.

Grandmother has settled deep into the quilted wingback chair, adjusting her wire-rimmed spectacles and opening the massive storybook. The little girl with the neat hair bow is leaning in close, pretending to be utterly captivated while secretly keeping track of how many minutes of bedtime evasion they have achieved.

Meanwhile, the boy has pulled up a chair on the right, resting his chin on his hands and staring intensely at the pages.

He knows the routine. If they ask enough thoughtful questions about the characters, grandmother will keep reading, the actual wax candles on the holiday tree will continue to burn down, and bedtime will be postponed until at least nine-thirty.

Behind them stands the centerpiece of Danish tradition: a tabletop fir tree decorated with clip-on candles, woven paper heart baskets, and treat cones, framed by a quiet Christmas star glowing through the snowy windowpane.

Produced in Copenhagen, Denmark, by the historic Bing and Grondahl porcelain manufactory, this annual 1978 plate is rendered in the company's famous cobalt blue underglaze relief.

The scene is sculpted in gentle raised ceramic contours, moving from crisp white highlights on the children's sweaters to deep, moody cobalt shadows in the window.

The reverse bears the official green underglaze factory stamp reading "COPENHAGEN PORCELAIN / B&G / MADE IN DENMARK", model number 9078, and the title "Julefortælling / A Christmas Tale".

It even comes pre-strung with its vintage gold braided hanging cord through the factory foot-ring holes, ready to hang straight onto your holiday gallery wall or sit on a tabletop plate easel.

Having lived through nearly fifty holiday seasons, it remains in good vintage condition. The porcelain body is structurally solid with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It exhibits honest vintage surface wear, including mottled glaze hazing across the lower foreground above the lettering, small glaze flecks in the blue field, a faint glaze line near the upper right tree, and light yellowish age staining on the rear foot ring. The original gold cord shows authentic fraying at the knot.
