In 1989, human neighborhoods had Neighborhood Watch signs featuring a cartoon figure in an oversized trench coat.

Out on the high plains, the prairie dogs had a much more sophisticated defensive protocol.

Look at this little sentry. He has scaled the highest piece of weathered driftwood in the county and assumed the ultimate tactical posture. Feet firmly planted, chest puffed out, nose twitching in the prairie wind.

He is scanning 360 degrees of open horizon for hawks, coyotes, badgers, and tourists stepping out of station wagons with disposable cameras.

The person who matted this photograph took zero chances with identification. Penned directly beneath the print on the faux-suede mat is the label "Prairie Dog" in neat, careful cursive ink, just in case a visitor mistook him for a particularly judgmental ground squirrel.

Dating to the late 1980s or early 1990s, this framed piece captures authentic vintage wildlife photography charm.

The color print is matted beneath real glass inside a luxurious tan suede-look mat with a cream bevel cut, accented along the bottom by a row of decorative embossed dashes.
