Vintage Octagonal Portrait Tins Pair Victorian Children Dog Metal Wall Art

✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 359 | The Regency Sibling Standoff of 1974

In 1974, home decorators discovered an ingenious shortcut to aristocratic legitimacy: purchase an oversized tin of imported butter biscuits, eat every single crumb, and stick the empty lids straight onto the wood-paneled den wall.

Suddenly, you were no longer an ordinary suburban family watching television in your pajamas. You were custodians of a centuries-old European dynasty.

Look at the pair depicted here. This is not a peaceful family portrait. This is a quiet, high-society sibling rivalry conducted in oil paint and tinplate.

On the left sits the golden-haired young master. He is dressed in a vibrant crimson velvet jacket with an immaculate white ruff collar, posing dutifully for posterity.

However, his little white dog is experiencing an absolute existential crisis. Look into that terrier's eyes. That dog has been held in that exact grip for forty-five minutes and is silently praying for the sitting to end so he can return to chasing garden fowl.

Meanwhile, on the right, his sister is dressed in an angelic pink frock and a wide straw sun bonnet tied with a silk ribbon.

She appears sweet and demure at first glance, but do not be fooled by the bonnet. She is looking directly at the viewer with an expression that says she knows her brother ruined his stockings ten minutes ago, and she is planning to inform their governess the second the artist packs up his brushes.

Produced during the mid-to-late 20th century (circa 1960s to 1970s), this pair of large octagonal metal tins captures the charm of classic Georgian portraiture.

Each piece measures over twelve inches across, stamped in sturdy tinplate with an octagonal beveled basin.

The portraits are framed by an opulent embossed border of classical black and gold acanthus leaves, catching the light like gilded picture frames. The young lady's portrait even includes a printed craquelure finish designed to simulate aged oil paint on canvas.

Flip them over, and you will find plain gold-lacquered interiors bearing the greatest decorator battle scars of the 1970s: rectangular adhesive tape remnants where a past owner mounted them directly to a wall.

Whether displayed on decorative easels atop a dining sideboard, hung on a gallery wall alongside brass sconces, or used as catchall trinket trays on a vanity, this pair brings instant humor, warmth, and grandmillennial character to any room.

Having spent decades on display, they remain in good vintage condition. The lithographed portraits are colorful, clean, and structurally sound, with no major dents or bent edges. The boy tin displays light surface specks and small dings along the lower gold rim. The girl tin shows minor edge wear and light surface tarnish. The gold-toned interiors show age-related rim oxidation and the aforementioned rectangular mounting adhesive residue.

Style them on a bookshelf, lean them inside an antique hutch, or gift them to a collector who loves vintage tins with genuine personality.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.

Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character that matches its age and previous love.

The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
