In human society, neighborhood disputes involve passive-aggressive sticky notes, sternly worded emails, and awkward encounters at the mailbox.

In the bird kingdom circa 1981, neighborhood disputes were handled directly on the branch.

Look closely at the three chaffinches gathered on this birch trunk. This is not a peaceful pastoral gathering. This is an emergency session of the local branch committee, and tensions are running extraordinarily high.

The bird perched on the uppermost twig is the committee president. He is peering downward with sharp, unblinking skepticism, demanding to know who authorized the apricot blossoms to sprout three inches past the approved property line.

The bird on the lower left is looking upward, actively defending his floral landscaping choices and claiming he filed the proper environmental permits last Thursday.

Meanwhile, the third bird clinging upside down to the main trunk has completely opted out of the debate. He is thoroughly ignoring the politics, checking the bark crevices for beetle larvae, and praying the other two stop chirping before lunch.

Created by wildlife artist Paul Whitney Hunter during the golden era of textural botanical decor (circa late 1970s to 1980s), this framed lithograph captures European chaffinches in lovely watercolor and pencil styling.
