Rare Signed Helen Levitt Slide Show First Edition Color Photography Book 2005
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 349 | The Sidewalk Rooster Summit of 1974
Sometime in the early 1970s, three rogue roosters slipped away from a butcher shop, strutted right past a row of plastic-covered floral diner chairs on an open New York City sidewalk, and held an emergency municipal summit.
They thought they had slipped past the authorities undetected. Unfortunately for them, Helen Levitt was standing right there with a loaded Leica.
Levitt spent decades proving that New York was funnier and far weirder than any serious gallery critic cared to admit. That humor was hard-won, too. In 1970, a deeply misguided burglar broke into her apartment and stole virtually her entire life's work of early color slides. They probably thought they were fencing bearer bonds, only to end up with boxes of tiny film strips they could not sell to a soul.
Instead of despairing, Levitt responded with pure, unbothered New York grit: she picked up her camera, loaded a fresh roll of color film, and walked right back outside to document the sidewalk circus all over again.
The laugh, it turns out, belonged entirely to her. That second wave of work culminated in a historic 1974 continuous slide exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, curated by legendary director John Szarkowski.
Published in 2005 by powerHouse Books, "Slide Show: The Color Photographs of Helen Levitt" was the first major volume devoted entirely to her masterworks in color. Over half of the 109 full-color photographs in this collection had never been exhibited or published before this printing.
Most importantly, this copy is hand-signed "Helen Levitt" in crisp black ink on the title page without personalization. It is a verified first printing, featuring the complete number line ending in 1 on the copyright page, originating from the personal library of photographer Daniel Quat.
Whether displayed on a library bookstand, curated within an investment-grade photobook collection, or treasured by a lover of New York history, this signed volume represents American street photography at its absolute pinnacle.
Having been preserved in an artist collection, it remains in Very Good+ to Near Fine condition. The clothbound burgundy hardcover is clean and square with tight binding and pristine interior pages. The original pictorial dust jacket is bright and complete, displaying minor, honest handling wear including light bumping and creasing at the spine ends and corner tips.
