✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 352 | The Territorial Garden Viceroy of 1978

Some birds greet the morning with gentle, melodious song.

The bird on this plate, however, woke up and immediately decided to audit the entire backyard.

Look at his posture. Head cocked downward, tail feathers fanned skyward, and an expression of pure, unblinking surveillance. He did not alight on that daisy to smell the pollen. He landed there to confirm that no other bird had permission to be within forty yards of his shrubbery.

Legend has it that this plate was created in a sun-drenched pottery workshop in Jalisco in 1978, inspired by a real garden bird that terrorized a family of three outdoor cats.

Whenever anyone opened the kitchen door, this bird would puff up his speckled chest, glare from the fence post, and silently remind the humans that he had lived on the property first.

Handcrafted in the legendary ceramic center of Tonalá, Mexico, this sculptural folk art wall plate is a masterclass in classic Mexican stoneware.

Rather than a simple round shape, the platter is formed into an eye-catching six-sided hexagon with softly rounded corners.

The background is crafted from textured, speckled tan stoneware with a sandy matte finish. Floating in the center is an intricately hand-painted wildlife scene featuring a stylized songbird with dense stippled dots along its body, perched above a creamy white blooming daisy, deep earthy brown gourds, and curling midnight-cobalt flourishes.

The hexagonal rim is framed by a bold circular border ring and flanked by six graphic, fan-shaped brushwork palmettes in deep chocolate brown.

Flip the plate over, and you will find the authentic black slip artisan mark reading "Z MEX" alongside a raised foot ring pierced with its original wire hanging loop, making it ready to mount on your wall the moment it arrives.

Having spent decades in careful domestic display, it remains in very good vintage condition. The decorative face is clean, bright, and completely free of cracks, chips, or restorations. The glossy slip paint is crisp and tactile beneath the fingertips. The underside displays authentic artisan characteristics, including natural firing pinholes, minor shelf roughness on the unglazed foot ring, and a securely seated vintage wire hanger.

Style it on a gallery wall among brass mirrors and woven baskets, display it on a wooden easel atop a credenza, or gift it to a collector who loves authentic Mexican pottery with genuine personality.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.

Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.

The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
