Vintage Uncle Remus Book Joel Chandler Harris Grosset Dunlap AB Frost 7 In
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 348 | The Briar Patch Evasion Tactics
In the vast annals of folklore, heroes typically rely on magic swords, immense strength, or supernatural destiny.
Brer Rabbit, however, survived entirely on weaponized reverse psychology, boundless audacity, and knowing exactly how to manipulate his enemies into throwing him into the briar patch where he wanted to be all along.
First collected and published in book form by Atlanta journalist Joel Chandler Harris in 1880, these tales documented the rich, centuries-old oral tradition and trickster animal folklore that traveled from West Africa into the American South.
Through generations of Gullah and plantation storytelling, the tales of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear functioned as enduring allegories of survival: the triumph of the smaller, wittier animal over larger, brute-force predators.
While Harris preserved these oral narratives in written phonetical dialect, his late 19th-century plantation framing and idyllic depictions of Southern antebellum life have long been the focus of crucial literary study and cultural critique.
Today, collectors and historians approach the work as a fascinating, multi-layered artifact of American publishing history, celebrated particularly for the brilliant visual energy of master illustrator A. B. Frost, whose dynamic pen-and-ink line drawings defined these characters for over a century.
This vintage hardcover was issued by Grosset & Dunlap as part of their famous "Companion Library" series, featuring copyright registrations through 1921.
Bound in oatmeal-tan textured cloth, the front cover showcases the elaborate, unified Companion Library series graphic: interlocking leafy brambles framing decorative vignettes of classic storybook figures including Robin Hood, a frontier cowboy, an Indigenous hunter, and woodland creatures.
Inside, the volume features the complete text alongside over 100 classic A. B. Frost illustrations, including the unforgettable title-page vignette of a startled woodland fox caught off guard.
Whether placed on a dark wood library bookshelf, studied as a piece of American illustration history, or curated within an antique book collection, this volume carries immense graphic and historic presence.
Having lived through roughly a century of careful shelf keeping, it remains in very good vintage condition. The hardcover binding is structurally sound with intact hinges. The decorative tan cloth covers display crisp, dark printed artwork with honest, gentle shelf wear, including rubbed corners and softening along the head and tail of the spine. The interior pages are clean and intact with natural age toning, clear printing, and sharp black-and-white plates throughout.
Style it upright on a mahogany writing desk, display it between vintage bookends, or add it to a curated collection of early 20th-century illustrated classics.
