Vintage Beaded Evening Bag Ivory Seed Bugle Bead Handbag Hong Kong 1960s 10 In
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 345 | The Grand Ballroom Alibi
In 1962, purchasing an evening bag this glamorous was supposed to mean you had an official invitation to an embassy gala, a high-society charity ball, or at the very least, an opening night at the opera.
The original owner of this purse, however, did not wait around for high society to validate her accessories.
Legend says she bought this bag specifically to provide an ironclad alibi. Whenever someone asked why she was dressed in full cocktail attire on a Tuesday night, she would gesture vaguely toward the beaded leaf motifs, murmur something mysterious about "a diplomatic reception across town," and then proceed directly to a corner diner booth for black coffee and a warm slice of cherry pie.
She believed firmly that wearing glass beads and gold-tone metal to an ordinary dinner was not overdressing. It was simply refusing to let Tuesday win.
**Side note from Amy the owner: ** This bag is sturdy, heavy, and maybe one of the most beautiful bags I've ever seen.
Handcrafted during the golden age of luxury Hong Kong textile exports (circa late 1950s to 1960s), this vintage evening handbag is an exquisite example of meticulous artisan beadwork.
The body of the bag is covered in thousands of tiny glass beads arranged in striking architectural texture. Alternating vertical panels of luminous, cylindrical bugle beads create reflective ribbons of light, flanked by fields of creamy seed beads.
Floating in raised relief across the surface are sculptural laurel leaves crafted entirely from seed beads, creating wonderful dimensional texture beneath the fingertips.
The top is anchored by a scalloped, embossed gold-tone metal frame with a matching hand-beaded arch handle that rests comfortably in the hand or over the wrist.
Open the frame, and you will find a tailored cream satin interior featuring an elasticized slip pocket and the original woven cloth label reading: "Hand Made in Hong Kong."
Whether carried down the aisle by a vintage-inspired bride, paired with a little black dress for holiday cocktail parties, or styled on an antique vanity tray to hold keepsakes, this bag brings effortless mid-century glamour to any setting.
Having lived through decades of formal evenings, it remains in very good vintage condition. The exterior beadwork is remarkably sound, tight, and intact, with only the faintest handling wear. The gold-tone frame operates properly and shows light, authentic vintage surface patina along the edges. The interior cream satin lining shows honest historic character, including light scattered amber spots and age discoloration along the folds consistent with a genuine 1960s piece.
Carry it to your next formal affair, display it on an open vanity, or take it out for diner coffee simply because you can.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.
Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.
The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
