✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 341
The Sunday Social Deviled Egg Stand-Off
In the 1920s, American parlor entertaining was built around a singular philosophy: if you possess a table, you must place an iridescent orange glass pedestal upon it that catches the light like a small explosion.

This compote was engineered to elevate domestic life to a state of high drama.

Legend has it that this exact pedestal was the centerpiece of a 1948 church potluck supper, where it was tasked with holding a single remaining paprika-dusted deviled egg.

For forty-seven agonizing minutes, polite parishioners stood around the buffet table, making pleasant conversation about lawn care and Sunday school attendance, each desperately wanting that last egg but refusing to be the person who took it.

Through that entire psychological standoff, this pedestal held that egg aloft with sovereign majesty, shimmering in the dining hall lights and refusing to break composure.

Produced during the golden age of American carnival glass (circa 1910s to 1920s, heavily attributed to Imperial Glass and Ohio Valley glassmakers), this substantial compote is a masterwork of pressed iridescent art glass.

The pattern draws directly from the American Brilliant Cut Glass era: deep, sharp-molded whirling pinwheels, multi-point radiant hobstars, and intricate diamond-cane panels that cover the flared bowl, tapered stem, and wide domed foot.

The rim is finished in an undulating sawtooth edge that creates sparkling geometry against the light.

The color is rich, saturated marigold: a fiery amber-orange base glass sprayed with metallic salts before annealing, giving the interior basin a luminous oil-slick iridescence with shimmering pink, violet, and golden highlights.

Flip it over and the underside of the wide foot reveals a molded starburst center alongside authentic factory mold seams from the original pressing process.

Style it on a dining table filled with autumn gourds, use it on a sideboard to hold holiday candies, or let it stand empty near a sunny window where the glass can throw brilliant coppery light across the room.

Having lived through a century of holiday gatherings, it remains in very good antique condition. The heavy glass body is structurally sound with no cracks or structural repairs. The multi-point sawtooth rim is remarkably intact with only minor, expected mold roughness typical of early pressed glass. The iridescent finish remains vibrant and fiery, showing honest, light shelf wear on the foot ring and minor traces of vintage candle wax residue on the exterior facets from a historic centerpiece display.

Style it as an autumn centerpiece, display it on an antique oak sideboard, or add it to a curated collection of early American carnival glass.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.

Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.

The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
