Antique Royal Bonn Germany Orchid Trivet Franz Anton Mehlem Ceramic Tea Tile
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 331 | The Rhineland Orchid Insurgency
Late Victorian afternoon tea in the 1890s was supposed to be a quiet, dignified affair.
Guests were expected to sit straight-backed, nibble polite cucumber sandwiches, and speak in hushed, respectable tones while surrounded by polite brown wallpaper and starched white lace.
Then someone at the Franz Anton Mehlem porcelain works in Bonn, Germany, had an artistic epiphany: why should a hot iron teapot rest on something boring when it could land on a tropical explosion of screaming color?
Enter the Rhineland Orchid Insurgency.
Produced during the height of the Edwardian botanical craze (circa 1890 to 1920), this heavy ceramic tea tile refused to play by the rules of muted domestic decor.
The center showcases a Cattleya orchid blossom blooming with flamboyant ruffles in shades of cream, lavender, peach, and deep golden apricot, surrounded by slender olive-green leaves against a glowing primrose-yellow wash.
And just in case anyone failed to notice the centerpiece, the rim is banded in a thick, unapologetic ring of vivid electric turquoise glaze that commands attention from across the room.
Underneath, a raised ceramic foot ring lifted the hot tile just off the tabletop, preventing boiling silver or cast-iron teapots from scorching the French-polished mahogany underneath.
Flip it over, and you will find the stamped black factory tower hallmark featuring the interlocking "FAM" monogram of Franz Anton Mehlem, alongside "Bonn" and "Germany."
Having served through a century of tea parties, it wears its age with honest pride. The heavy earthenware body is completely sound with no structural cracks or broken sections. The rounded turquoise outer rim displays authentic, age-appropriate enamel wear and small surface chips from decades of clinking teapots, while the glossy top glaze shows light surface handling scratches.
Use it on your kitchen counter as a resting spot for a morning coffee French press, style it upright on a brass plate stand among potted plants, or let it bring bold antique color to an open dining room hutch.
