Vintage Gettysburg, PA Souvenir Ceramic Dog Figurine Basset Hound Puppy 5 In
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 329 | The Battlefield Basset of Taneytown Road
In the 1950s, family road trips to historic battlefields were serious, educational pilgrimages.
Parents dragged carloads of children across the rolling fields of Gettysburg in the July heat to study troop movements, artillery lines, and the solemn turning points of American history.
Children, on the other hand, had one single objective: endure the lecture, sit through the presentation of the famous Electric Map inside the National Museum on Taneytown Road, and sprint directly to the gift shop.
And what did roadside souvenir stands stock to commemorate the bloodiest clash of the Civil War? Replicas of brass bugles? Mini cannonball paperweights? A solemn bust of Abraham Lincoln?
No. They stocked small, delightfully innocent ceramic hound puppies with droopy ears and absolutely zero tactical military awareness.
This little scout is pure mid-century roadside Americana gold. Cast in hollow earthenware, he stands at the ready with an upturned tail, stubby paws, and enormous floppy ears framing a remarkably soulful, wistful face. His coat is glazed in warm ivory cream, decorated with hand-applied reddish-brown sponge stippling across his ears, back, and tail.
Across his spine sits the prized trophy of that mid-century vacation: an intact paper souvenir banner decal flanked by red ribbon tails, reading "National Museum, Gettysburg, PA."
He had no interest in flank maneuvers or cavalry charges. His historic domestic duty was to sit on the back shelf of a station wagon on the ride home, take up a permanent post on a living room end table, and guard a glass dish of butterscotch candies for the next half-century.
Having survived decades of gentle household affection, he remains in very good vintage condition. The ceramic is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, breaks, or repairs. The body displays a fine, authentic network of clear glaze crazing, the calling card of genuine mid-century pottery, alongside minor handling wear to the underside of the paws and light vintage age patina to the paper banner.
Perch him on an open bookshelf alongside vintage travel memoirs, style him on a cozy cottage mantel, or gift him to a dedicated hound dog lover who appreciates mid-century roadside history.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.
Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.
The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
