Vintage Swetye Pottery 22K Gold Pedestal Bowl Mid Century Compote Ohio 6 In
✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 325 | The 22-Karat Compote of Suburban Ambition
In post-war Ohio, dinner entertaining was a high-stakes competitive sport.
You could not simply put out a bowl of salted mixed nuts in an ordinary ceramic dish and expect your neighbors to be impressed. You needed real, unapologetic drama. You needed actual precious metal fired directly into the glaze so the bridge club knew you were thoroughly thriving.
Enter the 22-Karat Compote of Suburban Ambition.
Crafted in Salem, Ohio, by Swetye Pottery, this footed compote represents the absolute peak of mid-century Hollywood Regency entertaining. Swetye operated right in the historic pottery belt of eastern Ohio, carving out a dedicated following for opulent, heavily gilded giftware designed to catch the ambient glow of dining room chandeliers.
The silhouette is classic mid-century sculptural flair: a flared, wide-mouth chalice bowl perched atop a tapered trumpet pedestal foot.
What looks like sweeping brushwork across the exterior is an intentional, hand-applied "weeping gold" textured relief technique. Raised arcs of stippled gold contrast with the mirror-shine liquid bright gold luster, creating dimensional swirls that catch every flick of candlelight. Inside, the bowl is glazed in a smooth, high-gloss ivory cream.
Turn it upside down, and you will find the smoking gun stamped clearly on the dry foot: the circular brown factory mark reading "SWETYE / 22 K. GOLD / SALEM, O."
Having survived sixty years of cocktail parties, it remains in wonderful vintage condition. The ceramic is completely sound with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The 22K gold luster is radiant and reflective, showing only faint handling scratches, light shelf contact underneath, and gentle, age-appropriate rubbing along the top rim edge where generations of party hosts lifted it from the buffet.
Use it as an opulent entryway catchall for keys and pocket treasures, fill it with wrapped dark chocolates on a coffee table, or let it bring authentic mid-century gold glamour to your dining centerpiece.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.
Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.
The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
