I found this piece tucked onto a crowded thrift store shelf, and within thirty seconds, I was deep into a serious, high-level intellectual conversation with the person standing beside me in the aisle.

I was dissecting the entire scene with scholarly rigor. "Look at this," I said, gesturing passionately at the frame. "What are the meteorological logistics here? Does frostbite simply not exist in this hamlet? Are we witnessing a tender holiday moment, or is this child attempting a medically ill-advised rescue on an anthropomorphic creature made of solid frozen precipitation? And look at his face. He is entirely unbothered by the thermodynamic consequences."

I paused, waiting for their insightful reply. I chuckled, nodded knowingly, and turned around to make eye contact.

There was nobody there.

I had spent three solid minutes delivering a masterclass on cold-weather romance to an empty shelf of scratched Teflon pans. Somewhere in the housewares department, a stranger had quietly walked away while I debated snowman anatomy with myself.
