In 1925, René Lalique stunned Paris with delicate frosted art glass covered in wispy nymphs and fluttering dragonflies.

A few years later in Monaca, Pennsylvania, American master designer Reuben Haley looked at that delicate French glass and decided Americans needed something with substantially more horsepower.

The result was the legendary Phoenix Glass sculptured line: heavy, thick-walled Art Deco glass engineered to survive modern life while looking like an absolute museum piece.

Instead of polite little songbirds, Phoenix gave us three massive wild geese banking hard through frosted marsh grass across an 11-inch flattened pillow vase. The birds are sculpted in dramatic high relief, but what makes this specific survivor extraordinary is the finish.

While many Depression-era examples were left as flat, chalky white milk glass, this piece was treated with a radiant mother-of-pearl iridescent luster. When sunlight hits the glass, the sculpted wings and feathers glow with soft flashes of champagne, lavender, and gold over the velvety acid-frosted ground.

Weighing in like a solid piece of architectural salvage, it has the kind of heavy, grounded presence that commands any table it lands on. It looks equally at home anchoring a moody mid-century credenza, holding fresh tall botanical branches, or catching natural backlight in a sunny bay window.
