There was a brief, glorious chapter in early 20th-century interior design when society collectively agreed that dumping your pocket lint, car keys, and loose coins onto a bare nightstand was a crime against civilization.

Perched high upon a hand-carved slab of translucent, honey-and-caramel banded onyx marble, this cold-painted cock pheasant does not care about your modern daily struggles. He has an iridescent blue-green neck, a golden breast, an impeccably barred tail, and the unblinking, haughty gaze of an heir waiting for someone else to pick up the dinner tab.

The stone dish beneath him is a masterclass in Art Deco lapidary contrast. The shallow center is scooped out and buffed to a glassy polish, while the outer perimeter was intentionally left raw, chiseled, and rugged, giving it just enough earthy mountain grit to balance out his high-society attitude.

Down on the underside, the original dark protective felt remains fully intact. Because these figures were pinned through the stone beneath that backing, he has developed a tiny, minor wiggle at the ankles over the decades. He is completely secure and not going anywhere, but like any elderly aristocrat after two afternoon cocktails, he has just a little bit of sway.
