✨ Cabinet Curiosity No. 302 | The First Lady of Vanity Drama
There is having a modest skincare routine, and then there is lifting the First Lady of the United States by the torso just to grab a puff of bath powder.
Back in the late 1930s, vanity tables were not interested in minimalist plastic organizers. If you were freshening your face before dinner, the New Martinsville Glass Company believed you deserved a full-blown Colonial Revival theatrical production.
Enter the legendary Martha Washington powder jar: a sculptural, frosted green glass monument to monumental petticoats and historical reenactment. Martha stands poised atop the domed lid like the undisputed matriarch she was, flanked by two colonial children who are clutching her voluminous skirts as if a gale-force wind just swept across the Potomac.
The entire figural grouping was pressed directly into the mold, doubling as an elaborate sculptural handle. Lift the founding family away, and you reveal a generous rectangular basin resting on four molded scroll feet, framed with raised rose garlands and swags.
Produced in West Virginia between 1937 and 1944 (just before New Martinsville rebranded as Viking Glass), this green satin vanity box is one of the most sought-after boudoir glass rarities of the era. Complete, intact survivors with all three figures undamaged are genuinely tough to find because those little colonial arms and flared skirt hems were notorious for chipping over the last eighty-odd years.
This beauty has survived with remarkable grace. All three heads, hands, and drapery folds are intact, the four-footed base is sturdy, and the velvety frosted green satin finish gives off a soft, ethereal glow on any dresser.
Drop it on your vanity to stash heirloom rings, use it on a bathroom shelf for luxury soaps, or let Martha command center stage in your Depression glass cabinet.

A Note About Vintage Items & Their Little Crimes
Many of the treasures at Honeyblue Hollow come from estate sales, flea markets, and consignment shops where interesting things wait to begin their next chapter. Because they existed long before they found me, their pasts are checkered.
Vintage means used: Expect honest, authentic character consistent with age and previous love.
The Smell & Storage Factor: My workspace is pet-friendly and smoke-free. Buyers with extreme sensitivities should review the full Vintage Items & Allergens note in my Shop Announcement.
