Picture a pottery studio in the late 1970s. The air smells like damp clay, herbal tea is steeping in an oversized ceramic mug, and a potter is lost in deep meditation at the wheel.
They pull up a round, bulbous stoneware pot, look out the window at a windy salt marsh, and think: "This pot needs more wetland drama."
So, while the glaze was still fresh, they carved delicate marsh grasses and reeds directly through the blue-gray surface, letting the pale stoneware clay peek through in crisp sgraffito lines. Right above the grass line, they added a row of dotted indentations beneath a wide, rolled cream rim dusted with iron speckles.
Then, in true rogue artisan fashion, they completely refused to sign their masterpiece. The flat bottom is smooth and unmarked, leaving behind only a faint, mysterious smudge near the foot ring to keep ceramic collectors guessing for the rest of eternity.
Inside, you can feel the distinct spiral throwing rings left behind by the potter's fingers as the wheel spun. Because it has no drainage hole, it makes an ideal home for a small potted nursery plant, a bundle of dried wildflowers, or an eclectic assortment of desktop paintbrushes.

Craft & Method: Wheel-thrown studio stoneware vessel with a bulbous body, narrower foot, and wide rolled rim.
Technique: Sgraffito incised marsh grasses and wild reeds carved into the outer body.
Glaze Palette: Glossy slate blue-gray lower body paired with a speckled oatmeal-cream collar and rim.
Interior Finish: Fully glazed cream interior showing concentric spiral throwing ridges.
Markings: Unmarked flat base with an illegible artist imprint near the foot edge.

Dimensions: ~4.25" Total Height x ~4" Rim Diameter x ~3" Foot Base Diameter.
Materials: Hand-Thrown Stoneware Ceramic, Glossy and Speckled Glazes.
Condition: Excellent handmade vintage condition. Structurally solid with no cracks or interior staining. Natural glaze speckling, slight glaze pooling variations, and subtle wheel asymmetry are hallmarks of its handcrafted origins. Note: There is a tiny, pale, pin-sized roughness or fleabite at the outer edge of the unglazed bottom foot. Has no drainage hole; recommended for dried stems or as a cachepot.
