Picture 1978. Shag carpets were deep, fondue was bubbling, and the designers at Syracuse Ornamental Company (Syroco) were busy executing one of the greatest design heists in American decor history: convincing suburban households that heavy-duty molded resin was hand-carved mahogany.
Enter mold number 3330.
This piece gives you the drama of an 18th-century European palace, boasting massive scalloped shell crests, swirling acanthus leaf corner flourishes, and beaded inner detailing. But nestled inside that unapologetically opulent faux-wood border sits a serene East Asian inspired botanical garden: creamy white lilies, blush pink cabbage roses, and delicate butterflies floating against a muted olive and sepia backdrop. It even features a printed calligraphic signature and red artist chop seal in the lower corner so you can feel cultured while eating dinner on the sofa.
It is the ultimate Grandmillennial party trick. Tap the frame and you will hear the lightweight, hollow thud of 1970s thermoplastic ingenuity, but hang it on your wall and every visitor will assume you outbid a private collector at an estate auction.
