It was brutally hot at a Pennsylvania yard sale when a young mom picked up this dress, looked at the fabric and said, "Velvet? In this heat?"
She put it down.
I laughed, picked it up and said, "It is not always going to be this hot in Pennsylvania."
And that is how this tiny velvet treasure came home with me.
This one-of-a-kind vintage mini dress was specially handmade by a woman named Catherine, according to the personalized woven label inside. Based on its silhouette, materials and decorative details, it appears to date from the late 1960s to early 1970s.
The dress is made from rich fuchsia or raspberry-pink velvet or velveteen and features dramatic short puff sleeves, a fitted pintucked bodice and a softly shaped mini skirt. Elaborate cream soutache-style trim decorates the high rounded collar and sleeve cuffs, with clear faceted embellishments scattered throughout the design.
Four small gold-tone rhinestone-style buttons decorate the center front. These buttons are ornamental; the dress closes with a long center-back zipper.
The overall look falls somewhere between late-1960s Mod fashion, Victorian revival, holiday party dressing and the wardrobe of a very fashionable storybook villain.

Condition & Care:
Beautiful vintage condition. The velvet shows light, natural variations in the nap, which simply affects how the fabric beautifully catches the light. The interior handmade label has a bit of fraying, and the delicate trim shows minor age-related wear. As an authentic, handmade garment, tiny quirks in the stitching are part of its unique history and charm.
To protect the velvet and delicate embellishments, professional dry cleaning by someone experienced with vintage garments is highly recommended before wear. Please do not machine wash or place in a dryer.
